Social Studies Philosophy

The Social Studies Department at Saint John's aims to foster a deep understanding of the human experience through a diverse curriculum that equips students with critical thinking, analytical, and research skills. Through its three-year core curriculum and a vast array of electives. The department prioritizes lifelong skills like critical thinking and ethical reasoning to prepare students for active citizenship and leadership in a globalized world.

  • Cultivate Historical Empathy & Ethical Reflection

    Students will develop empathy by examining history through the lens of individuals’ experiences, focusing on the ethical implications of historical events and decisions. They will reflect on the moral lessons of history to guide their actions as ethical citizens in a diverse and ever-changing world.
  • Foster Critical Thinking & Analytical Skills

    Students will develop the ability to analyze historical events, social issues, and cultural movements through critical thinking, evaluating multiple perspectives, and forming well-supported arguments. They will learn to assess primary and secondary sources for bias, reliability, and relevance to develop a deeper understanding of the world.
  • Promote Global Awareness & Civic Responsibility

    Students will gain an understanding of global interconnectivity, diverse cultures, and the role of individuals in shaping society. They will explore how historical events have shaped current political, economic, and social systems, and recognize their roles as informed citizens within local, national, and global communities.

Saint John’s High School has educated young men under the sponsorship of the Xaverian Brothers since 1898. Through the Saint John’s strong college preparatory curriculum, over 900 students in grades seven through twelve pursue personal and intellectual growth in an environment that is committed to the development of the whole person and recognizes a moral dimension of life through service to God and to others.
