Purpose, People & Preparation

One hundred and twenty-five years ago, in 1898, the Xaverian Brothers founded Saint John’s High School in the Grafton Hill neighborhood of Worcester, Massachusetts.  Today, Saint John’s continues as a Xaverian Brothers Sponsored School (XBSS), which is a network of Roman Catholic college preparatory schools that share a common mission and governance structure.  Like Saint John’s, most of the XBSS schools trace their origin directly to the Congregation of the Brothers of Saint Francis Xavier, whose core mission is evangelization through the ministry of education, with a commitment to excellence, service to the poor and marginalized, and the formation of the whole person: spiritual, social, physical, intellectual, creative, and aesthetic.

In living its charism, there are two striking ideas from the Fundamental Principles of the Xaverian Brothers that highlight the mission and vision of Xaverian Brothers’ Sponsored Schools. The first speaks to the fundamental dignity of our students, rooted in the belief that each of us is “created by the God of love in God’s image and according to God’s likeness, to be a unique expression of that love.  It is through you that God desires to manifest Love to the people of the world in these times, and to offer them the freedom of the children of God.”  The second idea is the premise of Xaverian education that our schools are a place where “enduring personal relationships” are created, nurtured, and strengthened. We highlight here these two guiding principles, as they continue to be the central thread of the work of Saint John’s High School and the results of the strategic planning process.

The strategic priorities and this plan build upon three key components of the school’s success: purpose, people, and preparation.  Saint John’s has always been a community, first and foremost, of people who share in common a vision for how best to educate boys and young men. Our community has always done this through a strong sense of purpose and a commitment to prepare for what comes next after a student’s time on Temple or Main Street. Saint John’s constantly seeks to build on its strengths with an eye to the current and emerging needs of boys and young men.

As the school approaches these key strategic priorities, it will do so through the lens of personnel, programming, and physical plant. This comprehensive view allows for the school to make thoughtful and long-lasting decisions that will provide maximum impact on the experience of all in our community.

Purpose, People & Preparation - A Strategic Plan for Saint John’s High School 2023-2028 focuses on four key areas:
  • Excellence in Teaching and Learning
  • Curriculum of Care in Support of Community Wellness
  • Deeper Sense of Belonging Among All Community Members
  • Celebration and Promotion of the Many Opportunities of the Saint John’s Experience
Saint John’s High School has educated young men under the sponsorship of the Xaverian Brothers since 1898. Through the Saint John’s strong college preparatory curriculum, over 900 students in grades seven through twelve pursue personal and intellectual growth in an environment that is committed to the development of the whole person and recognizes a moral dimension of life through service to God and to others.
