Physical Education Philosophy

Saint John’s, a Catholic, college-preparatory school, believes that man has been created by God and has his end in God. Man eternally seeks the perfection of truth, goodness, and beauty which is in God. In the light of the stated philosophy the following beliefs are considered essential for the physical man: to help the student realize the value of good health, to lead the student to an appreciation of physical activity as a means to good health and as a source of enjoyment, and to encourage an appreciation of the role and value of manly competition as a means of developing a mature individual.

Our Goals

List of 3 items.

  • Motor Skills and Movement Competence

Students should learn fundamental movement patterns, such as running, jumping, throwing, and catching, and refine these skills through structured practice and repetition. This includes mastering both individual and team-based activities, from basic sports skills (e.g., dribbling a basketball, serving in tennis) to more complex movement patterns like coordination and agility. The goal is to build competence and confidence in a wide array of physical activities, enabling students to enjoy and participate in sports and fitness for life.
  • Physical Fitness and Health

This goal focuses on building and maintaining physical fitness in students, which is essential for long-term health and well-being. Students should be exposed to a variety of physical activities that improve their cardiovascular health, muscular strength, flexibility, and overall body composition. The goal is not only to help students meet fitness benchmarks but also to encourage them to understand the importance of regular exercise in maintaining their health.
  • Social and Emotional Skills

Physical education also plays a crucial role in developing students’ social and emotional skills, such as collaboration, communication, and emotional regulation. Students are encouraged to work together in teams, solve problems collectively, and demonstrate respect for others in competitive and cooperative contexts. The goal is to instill qualities such as leadership, empathy, perseverance, and resilience, which are essential not only for sports but also for personal growth and success in life. Sportsmanship, including handling both victory and defeat with grace, is emphasized, and students are encouraged to set personal goals and reflect on their progress.
