Crew | Grades 9-12

The mission of the Saint John's Crew Program is to foster camaraderie and a strong work ethic through the sport of rowing.

Crew offers student-athletes the opportunity to excel in one of the most challenging and rewarding sports, focusing on teamwork, endurance, and precision. With a strong emphasis on building strength, conditioning, and technical rowing skills, the program provides comprehensive training for athletes of all experience levels. Under the guidance of skilled coaches, students learn the fundamentals of rowing, as well as strategies for effective collaboration and communication within the boat. The team competes in regattas across the region, showcasing their hard work and dedication. Beyond the physical demands of the sport, the Crew Program instills valuable life lessons in discipline, resilience, and leadership, helping athletes develop a strong sense of camaraderie and work ethic. Whether aspiring to compete at the collegiate level or simply seeking to challenge themselves in a unique sport, Saint John’s Crew Program offers a supportive and inspiring environment where students can thrive.

Saint John's Rowing was started in 1963 by Ken Burns, an instrumental figure in rowing on Lake Quinsigamond. The team originally rowed out of the Worcester Boathouse, and moved to the Donahue Rowing Center in 1993.  Since its establishment over 50 years ago the team has grown to one of the largest on campus. Each season the entire squad nears 90 students, and each school year Saint John's Rowing coaches approximately 110 different students.

Saint John's Rowing is a two-season (Fall and Spring) sport made up of three levels: Varsity, JV, and Novice. Novice is for all students who have no prior experience and is open to students in any grade (9-12). Students do not have to commit to both seasons each year, they may row only one season if they would like to compete in another sport.

Saint John’s High School has educated young men under the sponsorship of the Xaverian Brothers since 1898. Through the Saint John’s strong college preparatory curriculum, over 900 students in grades seven through twelve pursue personal and intellectual growth in an environment that is committed to the development of the whole person and recognizes a moral dimension of life through service to God and to others.
