Mathematics Philosophy

The Mathematics Department of Saint John’s believes that mathematics is a powerful tool for understanding and engaging with the world. Our department is committed to providing students with a rigorous, inclusive, and supportive learning environment that promotes curiosity, perseverance, and confidence in their ability to solve problems. We strive to help students build a strong conceptual understanding of mathematics, develop logical reasoning, and apply their skills in real-world contexts. By offering a range of instructional strategies and encouraging collaboration, we aim to meet the diverse needs of all learners, preparing them for future academic and career pursuits in a world where mathematical thinking is increasingly essential.

  • Create a Supportive, Yet Rigorous Classroom Environment

    Provide rigorous materials and assignments that push students beyond their comfort zones while ensuring that students feel safe to express their thoughts and questions without fear of judgment.
  • Develop Independent Learners

    Help students set personal, achievable goals and give them a sense of ownership over their learning.
  • Encourage a Growth Mindset

    Emphasize effort and resilience while teaching students that mistakes are part of the learning process and provide strategies for overcoming challenges.

Saint John’s High School has educated young men under the sponsorship of the Xaverian Brothers since 1898. Through the Saint John’s strong college preparatory curriculum, over 900 students in grades seven through twelve pursue personal and intellectual growth in an environment that is committed to the development of the whole person and recognizes a moral dimension of life through service to God and to others.
