Filling Role of Recent Coaching Retiree, Charlie Eppinger ’92
After Concluding a Successful 18 Season Run
It is with great excitement that Saint John's High School announces the appointment of Casey Cummins as its Head Varsity Baseball Coach effective immediately. Casey also currently serves on the Saint John’s faculty as a Middle School Social Studies teacher.
Casey, an Auburn native, graduated from Saint John’s High School in 2008. During his time at Saint John’s High School, Cummins was a successful student-athlete who, after graduating from Saint John's, attended Merrimack College where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Arts and, later, Worcester State University where he received a Master’s Degree in Education.
While in college, Casey worked under Charlie Eppinger as a roving assistant for Saint John’s Baseball at all levels. Later, following his college graduation, Casey coached in various capacities - including, Assistant Coach for the Bourne Braves in the Cape Cod League, Central Mass Thunder AAU, and West Boylston Post 204 Legion Teams, Pitching Coach at Nichols College and the CRA Hit Center, and as an Instructor at the 108 Stitchez Baseball Camp. Casey also served as the Pitching Coach and Youth Camp Director for the Worcester Bravehearts from 2014 to 2018, reaching the Championship Series all five seasons and winning the Futures Collegiate Baseball League Championship in 2014, 2015 and 2018.
Most recently, he served as the Head Baseball Coach at Sutton High School where he oversaw the instruction and development of players in grades 8-12, created daily practice plans for both varsity and JV programs, and oversaw the college recruitment and summer baseball placement processes for players. Under his leadership, the Sutton baseball team qualified for the State tournament each year, reaching the MIAA Elite 8 Round in 2022.
“As a proud Saint John’s alum and former player and coach, I truly understand the importance of this position and the program’s history of excellence,” reflects Casey Cummins, the newly appointed Coach. “I am honored to continue this legacy and look forward to not only emphasizing the growth and advancement of our baseball program but also, and most importantly, of our student-athletes as they develop both on and off the field.”
“Casey’s pride for Saint John’s, his experience, and his dedication to our mission as a school made a strong impression on our committee. We hired a great ‘baseball guy’ who understands the game and the important role that athletics plays in the formation of boys and young men as Pioneers,” says Headmaster Alex Zequeira. “Having welcomed Casey back to campus as a teacher in our Middle School this past fall, we have already seen the dedication and investment he has for our students in the classroom. He has an exciting vision for the future of our baseball program available to boys and young men in grades 7-12. We look forward to the coaching mentorship and athletic skill he will now bring to the field in working with our baseball players, families, and coaching staff.”
"Casey is a great choice for the Saint John’s baseball program,” says former Head Coach, Charlie Eppinger. “He has an infectious passion and enthusiasm for the game and will be an excellent coach and role model both on and off the field. I’m excited for Casey and look forward to the program’s continued success,” Eppinger concludes.
“We are thrilled to welcome Casey back to the diamond at Pioneer Field as the Head Coach for the Saint John’s Baseball program,” says Michael Mead, Saint John’s Athletic Director. “I have no doubt that he will continue the legacy that Charlie, and other legendary Saint John’s baseball coaching giants, established and continue to build a program that continues to foster our students both as players and well-rounded young men.”
