Students perform at Chinese Festival
For the tenth year in a row, the Saint John’s High School Chinese classes were invited to perform at the Chinese Spring Festival Celebration.

Held at Shrewsbury Oak Middle School on February 21, 2016, the event was a celebration of the Chinese Year of the Monkey. Chinese and Americans alike congregated to observe the holiday and celebrate Chinese tradition and culture.
For the Chinese classes, it was refreshing to take a break from the academic setting and deepen their understanding of Chinese culture in a jubilant atmosphere, as well as an optimal opportunity to implement the speaking skills they have been acquiring.
Determined to outdo last year’s performance, students began practicing well in advance under Mrs. Shi’s guidance. The event itself was a sight to behold. More than 800 people gathered in the auditorium to watch the performances, which commenced with a spectacular, traditional lion dance. Several other performances ensued, including songs, dances, comic dialogues, and instrumental solos.
Additionally, a few distinguished guests made speeches. Punctuated by intermittent applause and encouraging laughter, the Saint John’s performance was a rousing success! Backstage, fellow performers and event organizers lauded our efforts. It felt truly satisfying to receive such a warm response.
From preparation to completion, this year’s Chinese Spring Festival Celebration was a wonderful cultural experience. We had fun, learned a few things, and, most importantly, gained a greater appreciation for the people whose language and culture we are striving to learn. With great enthusiasm, we look forward to next year’s festivities!
